[ 2 NEW CAMERAS UNDER TEST ]

THE CANON EOS400D and the PENTAX K100D are currently on the dpexpert test program. The full reviews will be posted here over the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime have a look at some sample images from the two cameras in the Gallery.

Mimi — taken with the Canon EOS400D

Andrew — taken with the Pentax K100D

The Canon and the Pentax are both excellent cameras. The Pentax costs $1000 and the Canon [as tested with a high quality Canon lens] $2300.

I just bought K100D last night. So far, still learning how to use it. However, reading your posts, you mentioned it better to do some custom settings for it. would u mind share it for me?
Thx in advance

Right at the top of the main menu Pentax have a Tone setting with two positions. By default it is set to the top -- high saturation and high contrast -- and you should set it to the lower setting -- more natural colours and contrast.

In the Colour [color?] space setting choose Adobe RGB. Again this makes images less vivid but more realistic.

Then in the Saturation, Contrast and Sharpness settings it it worth experimenting with turning each one down just one notch. This is really trial and error -- take brackets of shots at the different settings and see which you like best.

In RAW all of these settings, except colour space, are disabled and irrelevant because the essence of RAW is to let the photographer decide on these image processing parameters and not the camera processor.

I would be interested to hear what you finally settle on for in-camera settings. Enjoy the camera -- it's a beauty.

Hope this helps.

I have been waiting for your report on the K100. It seems like I keep seeing your review on the Canon 400 (rebel xti), but not the k100. It would help my final decision. Like your web site. It's brevity is refreshing. chacha

Here I am in April 2007 looking for your review of the Canon DSLR EOS 400D particularly because I remember that it compared it back to the 30D. Where can I find that review please?
